This year also holds special significance as it coincides with the 30th anniversary of the proof and public announcement of Fermat’s Last Theorem (1995-2025). Pierre de Fermat, a 17th-century French mathematician, left an enduring mark on the scientific world with his famous note about the theorem, scribbled in the narrow margins of a book, Arithmetica. In his words, “Cuius rei demonstrationem mirabilem sane detexi. Hanc marginis exiguitas non caperet.“ (I have discovered a truly marvelous proof of this, which this margin is too narrow to contain.) Fermat’s claim—that he had a proof for the theorem—sparked centuries of curiosity and perseverance in the mathematical community. It wasn’t until 1995 that Andrew Wiles finally proved the theorem, a triumph that exemplifies the scientific community’s relentless pursuit of truth.
